Travel Rookies is a California- based, educational enrichment nonprofit that prepares first-time travelers—especially marginalized groups—with the cultural knowledge, confidence, and direct support needed to travel and explore the world safely and intentionally. Travel Rookies is a co-designed curriculum and residency that relies on the expertise of travel and mental wellness professionals, coupled with the curiosity and passion of students and families to manifest this unique travel program. Using the experiences of those who have traveled abroad and the apprehension of those who haven’t, our curriculum is designed so that students see themselves as Global Citizens and understand how invaluable their unique perspectives and presence are in their immediate environments and around the world. Parents and caregivers receive an abbreviated version of the classroom curriculum because we know that we advocate for communities that have been generationally excluded from high caliber enrichment opportunities. Kids from these families have a harder time mustering up hope when their environment has already drained it. Our students, who are Travel Rookies, are infusing the magical power of possibilities into their families and environments where their success is directly tied to the empowerment and uplifting of their communities.
